busy busy busy...

We've been up to a bunch of fun things the past month!

Our biggest focus has been to prepare for 2nd grade. They are working hard on reading fluency and comprehension. Many of the students have already met the end of the year goal for first grade! Remember 47 words per minute is the minimum.
We are counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies and working on strategies for subtraction math facts.  In writing,  we have been writing summaries, book reports, & instructions.

Only 1 more quarter left and still so much to learn!  Like I've told so many parents, I am very proud of our class and how much they have grown in 3 quarters... I can't wait to see them at the end of the year!

It's TIME

...for another post about time.  We practiced telling time to the hour last week and will continue this throughout the year.  Here are a few pictures of them working with their partners.

In writing, we learned to brainstorm with a partner(s).  For this particular writing, they wdescribed something in the classroom using adjectives.  The next day they used their webs and creatived sentences from them.  This week we are going to describe a haunted house... perfect for Halloween.

tick tock on the clock

We started learning about time today.  We tried to guess how long a minute was, learned the word analog, and reviewed the parts of a clock.  We will be practicing telling time to the hour and half hour throughout the year.
Then we learned a fun song/dance to help us remember what we learned.  Check us out!

rocks ROCK

We've continued to be geologists this week and learned about silt, clay & soil.  Look for some more pictures next week.
We will learn about another earth material!

In math, we are preparing for our first timed addition test.
We are practicing with the ten frame and understanding +0 and +1 facts.

week 2

During week 2, we continued learning and reviewing procedures.  Everyone is getting back into the school routine... including Mrs. King :)

We learned the Penny Dice game, Bunny Hop, and Top It this week and the kids loved them all.  At least once a week, they'll have the opportunity to play some of the games we've learned with a partner.  You can also play these games at home.  Ask your child about them.

All week long we have been working on creating an alphabet book in writing.  Each day we brainstormed some words that started with the letters/sounds we learned in Phonics.  Here are some of the students working on their letter for our class book.

Our Promise to Each Other-
